The Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) is Australia’s national regulator responsible for improving rail safety for the community through risk‑based regulation, oversight, and information sharing. ONRSR accredits and registers rail transport operators, conducts audits and inspections, enforces the Rail Safety National Law, and pursues compliance actions including investigations and prosecutions when necessary. The organisation publishes guidance, codes of practice, fact sheets and safety messages, maintains the National Rail Safety Register and national safety data, and issues safety alerts to industry stakeholders. ONRSR also coordinates national work programs, stakeholder forums, and provides resources and training to assist operators with safety management systems, fatigue management, drug and alcohol testing, and reporting obligations. Operating from a national office in Adelaide with regional contacts across Australian jurisdictions, ONRSR aims to proactively share insights from its regulatory activity and to support efficient and effective regulation of the rail sector through transparency, data provision and stakeholder engagement.
